BILL MOYERS JOURNAL takes viewers on the ground in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — a country almost one-fourth the size of the US — to follow aid workers and local relief efforts that are bringing hope to a forgotten land. “The aid agencies are almost substituting for a social welfare system that hasn't operated in these areas for decades,” says Dominic MacSorley, emergency director for Concern Worldwide, an international aid organization. The program profiles an innovative program that employs locals to bike food to remote areas.

Then, Bill Moyers interviews David Beckmann who is president of Bread for the World, an organization which campaigns to strengthen US political commitment to end world hunger and poverty. A clergyman and economist, Beckmann joined Bread for the World after serving the World Bank for 15 years overseeing projects to reduce poverty.

Two years after Katrina, casinos, hotels and condos are coming back strong in the hardest hit areas of Mississippi, but tens of thousands of people are still displaced—in limbo with no solution in sight. BILL MOYERS JOURNAL profiles a group known as The Steps Coalition, which is fighting on behalf of families who are still in need of housing. The Steps Coalition argues that Governor Haley Barbour's recovery plan has made it difficult for the states’ poorest families to rebuild.

BILL MOYERS JOURNAL continues its look at the FCC’s proposed plans to loosen media ownership rules in a report that includes the latest developments in the story. The segment begins with a look at the last of six public FCC hearings on the issue held last week in Seattle where the public largely expressed outrage at the possibility that media conglomerates may be allowed to control more of what Americans read, see, and hear.

Also on the program, a different take on immigration from author Manuel A. Vasquez. "This whole concept of illegality...is really problematic. Because it really doesn't go to the complexities of the situation,” he says.

We're it. There's nobody else,” says Cahill, who is best known for his THE HINGES OF HISTORY series of books, which includes the widely read HOW THE IRISH SAVED CIVILIZATION. Cahill says his books ask how we became the people we are: “It's human cruelty that is evil….We're not willing to acknowledge that this is inside of us. It's there,” he says. ”I'm really interested in…what's good about us.”

Big Media is pushing the FCC to relax ownership rules again to give conglomerates more control over what Americans read, see, and hear. What most Americans don’t know is that the FCC plans to fast track the rule changes and cut off public comment in December. Who wins and who loses? BILL MOYERS JOURNAL reports on the real-world consequences of media policy through the lens of how it affects minority media ownership in America.

“We have got to…believe that what we bring to our listening audiences everyday across this country is real,” says Melody Spann-Cooper, who runs WVON, the only black-owned radio station in Chicago, a city with more than one million African Americans. “Because we said it was real, not because Fox said it was real or Clear Channel said it was real.” The program examines how critics say media ownership rules have shut minorities out of the media and looks specifically at the current moves in Washington to adopt rules that could further diminish any accountability that broadcasters serve the public interest and their communities.

Katherine S. Newman, author of THE MISSING CLASS: PORTRAITS OF THE NEAR POOR IN AMERICA, discusses the millions in America, who despite decent wages can’t access public assistance and are one paycheck away from poverty.

NEXT WEEK - August 10, 2007 Bill will take a week off in August like many of us and Bill Moyers Journal will repeat the program broadcast last month about impeachment with guests John Nichols and Bruce Fein.

Moyers Talkers discussion group meets this month on Thursday, August 16 at 7:00 in the Learning Center of the Glendale Public Library.

All points of view are welcome whether or not you know how to use a computer or add to the local and national blogs. While you are always welcome to send comments to either blog on your own, the group watches segments of Bill Moyers Journal in the Learning Center, discusses topics that Moyers has presented in the previous four weeks and creates blog posts from the room as group, led by a facilitator.

Did you know that the Glendale Public Library has a blog about books? It's called Book Talk and we post information and reviews about the latest books. Recently, I wrote a post about a book that covers much of the same problem that Bill Moyers and Barbara Ehrenreich are talking about this week. It's called The Trap: selling out to stay afloat in winner-take-all America.

The Trap: selling out to stay afloat in winner-take-all America
The great thing about being a professional public librarian is that, while we are not overpaid like some people who work in professions, our souls are not sold out from under us either, and we have the psychic benefit of knowing we provide good public services to our community just like we intended to when we started work on our librarian Masters degrees.

In fact, most young people starting professional schooling have said that, from many years ago and still now in survey after survey, they very much want to find work that allows them to help their communities and to make the world a better place. However, in today’s economy, according to journalist Daniel Brook in his first full book, The Trap: selling out to stay afloat in winner-take-all America, almost none can hold onto those ideals anymore because they are in so much debt starting out.

Their education costs far too much, they cannot afford housing when they are young, they cannot raise a family when their age would allow them the energy to do so, or if they do have children they can’t see them more than a few moments a week because they are working far too many long hours just to support them, and they cannot get health insurance to cover themselves or their families unless they “sell out” to become a “microserf” or corporate drone and work even harder with fewer and fewer retirement options if they ever get there.\

One professor Brook interviewed said “most … students don’t take jobs in the hopes of getting fabulously rich. They do it to avoid the risk of being poor.”

Brook does a great job of putting everything in perspective, by tracing the problem’s historical roots from the conservative reaction to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal that made for a post-war middle class, that many people of my age grew up expecting to live in all our lives, to the Reagan era destruction of those ideals that, with the help of Clinton era corporatists, have led to the United States to levels of inequality and lack of social mobility so that there is no middle class anymore, and consequently, no sense of shared community purpose. In Manhattan, says Brook, the “income disparity is on par with Nambia, the most unequal country in the world, according to a recent UN Human Development report.”

“With entrenched wealth calling the shots, official Washington has become a status quo maintenance machine perpetually privileging what is over what might be.”

He also argues that contrary to the mythical belief in removing taxes from the super wealthy to free up inventiveness, such a system constrains creativity at every turn and prevents all but those who have money from having time or energy to create anything socially beneficial, and especially constrains dissent. Anyone who has seen the documentary Sicko understands that universal health care is not the only social utility that America now needs to make it possible to live a decent life. Like other developed countries, Brook says, American college education should be free, work life adaptations need to be made so that people can raise children and not have to leave a profession to do so, and so that creative Americans can provide services to others. He says“14.7 percent of the European workforce is self employed compared with only 7.3 percent of Americans. American entrepreneurs are clearly being held back from pursuing their dreams.”

Many things we take for granted should not be, he claims. Brook’s first book is fascinating and deserves to be read and discussed by many. He adds a comparison to the ancient state of Athens, one of the first to remedy the social problem of too few controlling the destinies of the rest. “One of Athens’ great unleashed talents, the philosopher Aristotle discerned a connection between a society dominated by the middle class and political stability and justice. The rich and poor, he noted, were prone to criminality, (think Enron and the Crips), while the middle-class obeyed the laws. He concluded that a just and well-run state must be controlled by a middle-class majority.”

Pick it up. A great read. If you're young, use it to change the world before we, the last of the middle class knowledge philanthropists, get taken away.

Bill Moyers introduced & chatted with his guests, Andy Bichlbaum of Triglyceride Investments, & his partner, Mike Bonanno of Tsetse Media, Inc. for 4 minutes before revealing that he was scamming his audience. I was not amused. Though ostensibly working for good, Andy & Mike have, as imposters, liars, frauds and con men, done the homework, reported their research findings, planted the seeds & unwittingly encouraged untold hundreds (maybe thousands) of lying, cheating thieving unscrupulous opportunists who watched the show & now know how naive, gullible & easily deceived the American public is, to actually commit fraud, deceit and corruption on the unsuspecting American public in this "greed is good" era we're now living in.

Do Lobby Firms Have Ethics?

Ken Silverstein, who pretended to be the leader of a firm representing one of the worst dictatorships in the world and was wooed aggressively by two lobby firms, suggests that they do not. His article appears in the July issue of Harpers magazine and is available to purchasers and subscribers.

This Moyers Talker found the story quite compelling and was amazed that the firms wanted the money from the fake company so badly that they created presentations to make Turkmenistan look better in American eyes.

Though the two companies complained that neither Silverstein nor Moyers sought their side of the story, Silverstein addresses their complaint in his blog post for Harpers yesterday and another journalist's complaint about his method of undercover journalism today. APCO's response is also on the Moyers site which also includes further information about lobbying ethics rules, ethics debates, and the companies themselves.

Superb overview of the issue, showing out and out hypocrisy. The man will be pardoned most likely by the president before he leaves office but why is it so important to the people who are requesting it? Some of them used the exact opposite argument when it came to the other party. At least Pat Buchanan brought up the points of law and that makes for good, informed debate.

I am tired of hearing about fault or blame or cause of the Iraq war. Tired of hearing what weapons were there or not, or what the President knew or did not know. We knew that the Iraqi president had used WMD's. The world believed he had them.

For me; we are fighting a war. Death in war is inevitable. Our soldiers are volunteers. For me again, we are there in Iraq to support an ally as we have promised to do. We said we were going to help them set up their own government and are doing so. If we flee in shame like we did in Vietnam (with the subsequent deaths of more than a million of our allies) , it will be, for me, a great shame again and probable blood bath.

What is this country coming to that what members of our government did do or not do (Libby or Rumsfield or?) govern what we should do for our allies?

Our Takes on Moyers Memorial Weekend

Last Friday's program with Maxine Hong Kingston was interesting, though repetitive for an ex-creative writing student who's been to lots of writing workshops. Learning to write as a way to deal with memories of horrors and feelings make sense not just for soldiers but for everyone who has gone through strong emotionally draining events. War is certainly the worst of all such occurences if for no other reason than wars should be ultimately avoidable. I especially was moved by the words of the man remembering how he had to tell a family of the death of their son and ended up spending a night in that son's room and discovered how much alike they were.

But I found the D-Day revisited program that Moyers did on Sunday was more interesting because the soldiers who had participated in the invasion of Normandy were part of something Americans could not avoid. Simple courage, bravery, heroism from quiet people ended up as stronger words, written and spoken. It is amazing what people with good values can do when they have to.

We viewed the Bruce Bawer segment of the May 18 Moyers Journal program & discussed multiculturalism in a wider sense & issues such as tolerance within our American democracy, boundaries, problems that arise when immigrants settle in America & not only refuse to assimilate, but attempt to impose their own cultural values on the already-existing culture of the country they're now living in. It was a stimulating exchange of ideas.

Interesting and thought provoking show on Moyer's interview with Bruce Bawer. Strong reactions to his discussions especially when he talked about the judge in Germany who would not grant a divorce to a Muslim woman because the Q'uran allows the husband to beat his wife even though German law does not allow a husband to do this. I find this stunning and quite intolerant to the rule of law. How can this be? How far are we willing to go to be truly tolerant of all cultures and religions? At what point must we recognize that we are a country of laws and these laws must override cultural and religious "laws."

Reminds me of a discussion I had with a very Southern and wonderful man concerning tradition. He had a deep belief in traditions such as Virginia Military Institute remaining all male - it is a long standing tradition he said to me. My response was that they use to bind women's feet in China and that was a tradition. Does that make tradition okay? Are cultural and religious laws really "tradition?"

On Bruce Bawer's segment

"Multiculturalism" does not mean "anything goes." There is broad agreement of what constitutes democratic values and human rights, for example, as expressed in the UN Declaration of Human Rights. While we cannot and do not wish to control what people think, we have a moral obligation to restrict what people DO when the actions -- no matter how sanctioned within their personal culture -- run counter to these fundamental values.

I'm not sure about European countries, but the US was created as a "democratic republic," and NOT as a pure democracy. This means we have safeguards against "the majority rules" when the vote of the majority would undermine the principles upon which the country is based.

This country has been a destination of refuge for people seeking more freedom, not less. Immigrant groups who oppose that basic principle do not have the right to undo the freedoms of this country. Not even in the name of "multiculturalism."

We watched a video regards a European Homosexual Christian man Bruce Bawers, who found Muslem peoples (men I assume) in Amsterdam, and elsewhere in Europe putting great pressure on him. It sounded as if he feared for his life to some degree. And certainly he fears that Democratic governments are not being able to face or handle the changes in their countries due to the influx of Muslem populations, with their differing views of what society should be like.

What I heard from him was that he expects European democracies to fail and fall to Muslim changes. I wonder what will happen here in the U.S.? See the USA Today story of May 23, 2007.

Re: Bawers interview: We've been talking about democracy and tolerance. We have wondered how it is that people mean well with tolerance at first but go so far that intolerable behaviors are tolerated. A democratic republic is not the same as pure democracy so something in the structure of the nation must preserve the values necessary to keep the nation free for all. No person should be above laws, nor should any group or culture. We are a nation of laws which must accept cultural differences of appearance but not differences of behavior. I hope Americans do not forget what it takes to live together.

This week on Bill Moyers Journal (check local listings) For all the words she's poured on the page, for the last 15 years, award-winning author Maxine Hong Kingston has been coaxing words from a very different source. In the hills of Northern California, she's been working with veterans - soldiers from World War II, from Vietnam, and now, from Iraq - helping the men and women who come here convert the ghosts of war into the words Kingston believes will help them survive. Their words can now be found in her latest book: Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace.

"My hope is that through art, through telling their stories, by having people hear what they went through, it changes them again," Kingston tells Bill Moyers. "There's the coming home from war, being broken, feeling losses, but then there is a wholeness that takes place if the person were able to write their story, to write their poem, to have people hear them and listen and understand. Then they are changed again."

Melissa Harris-Lacewell confronts head-on the issue of constructively discussing race in America and the place for this conversation in US politics. Harris-Lacewell is an Associate Professor of Politics and African American Studies at Princeton University, and the author of Barbershops, Bibles, and BET: Everyday Talk and Black Political Thought.

Ten years ago in his book Stealing Jesus, Bruce Bawer, a gay, Christian man of faith, warned that Christian Conservatives had hijacked Jesus' message of love and replaced it with a narrow minded legalism. He left America for Europe to escape fundamentalist bigotry, but what he found instead may surprise you.

It's good to hear the truth from people like Miller & Bonini, but the question is: What do we do with the truth in a world ever accepting of liars, cheats, & incompetents, & how do we protect ourselves from them? There seems to be no way to hold non-high profile immoral, unethical & incompetent people accountable for their actions. It makes everyone vulnerable and, because of it, insecure.
